The first unit of the 1000 MW power project of the NLC Tamilnadu Power, a joint venture of Tangedco and Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), is likely to commission by the end of August 2014. Besides, the company is also expected to be commissioned its Unit-II by the end of October 2014. The cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 6,602.74 crore.  Due to non-mobilisation of adequate manpower by Bharat Heavy Electricals and technical problems in the boiler, there was initial delay in the project. Currently, NLC operates four lignite based power stations with a total capacity of 2,740 MW.

Neyveli Lignite Corporation is engaged in the business of lignite mining and power generation. At present, the company has four opencast lignite mines with a capacity of about 30.60 million tonnes per annum, and is generating 2490 MW of power.
