India not blocking global trade agreement: Prime Minister

10 Sep 2014 Evaluate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that India is not standing in the way of a rules-based global trade agreement. Prime Minister comment came following the allegations that India blocked the conclusion of World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on the issue of food subsidy.

Prime Minister held a meeting with the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Jose Graziano da Silva on September 9 and made it clear that India cannot sacrifice the interests and food security of the poor and farmers. Narendra Modi urged the FAO chief to take initiatives for protecting the interests of poor and farmers at the WTO.

In July, India had made it clear to WTO that it would not agree to the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) unless there is a tangible and credible evidence of movement on arriving at a permanent solution on safeguards to run food security programmes of developing nations without attracting any penalty and a package for least developed countries (LDCs). The TFA is aimed at simplifying customs procedure, reducing transactions cost and increasing transparency and is being pushed by the developed countries as they seek to strengthen their sagging economies through an unrestrained global trade by way of a uniform and easy procedures at customs.

In order to address the emerging challenges in Indian agriculture, Narendra Modi sought a partnership with the global food organisation FAO for capacity-building in food storage and designing a special campaign targeted at women in India, to improve nutritional value and food habits. Prime Minister also discussed the ways and means for FAO to contribute towards increasing nutritional value in the mid-day meal scheme for school children, enhancing production and protein content of pulses, enhancing milk productivity, improving production of oilseeds and modernisation of fisheries in India.
