Hindustan National Glass' 2,500-tonne-a-day glass container manufacturing capacity is set to double in the next five years helping to grow its market share at home and abroad. The company has announced plans to expand production capacity and strengthen support infrastructure including a Rs 2,000-crore mega glass complex in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. The company controls about two-thirds of the domestic market for glass bottles and exports about five per cent of its production.
The mega glass complex at Naidupet, about 110 km north of Chennai, will be the largest of its kind in South East Asia with one of the largest furnaces, of 175 sq.m to make glass for containers. The location is at proximity to major ports in Krishnapatnam and Chennai, presence of raw material availability within a 200 km radius and easy access to major consumption centres like Bangalore and Chennai. Also, the State Government has assured continuous power supply through dedicated “double feeder” power lines.
In a yet another development, it has finalised JV plans with Omco of Belgium, a world leader in making moulds needed to produce glass containers. The equal joint venture, Omco HGN Engineering Ltd, will establish a Rs 60-crore unit in Pondicherry to produce 1,600 moulds and 50 tonnes of castings a month. Eventually this will be expanded to 4,000 moulds and 200 tonnes of castings. HNG now makes about 600 moulds monthly. Apart from expansion, the new unit will have the advantage of higher quality and productivity. This unit will be a centralised facility meeting the needs of all of HNG's units. The company has six glass container manufacturing units across India and the Southern market is one of its strongest growth areas.
