Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd (PGCIL) plans to expand its telecom business by leasing out trans- mission towers to firms such as Bharti Airtel Ltd, Vodafone Essar Ltd and Bharat San- char Nigam Ltd.
The board of PGCIL, which already offers fibre optic ser- vice to telecom operators, will consider the move early this month. PGCIL has a nationwide net- work of 150,000 towers. It initially plans to lease out only around 10% of them, but the business will be gradually scaled up. The firm expects to earn Rs. 400 crore in annual revenue from the tower business within eight years of operation.
According to PGCIL, the infrastructure will be theirs and the telecom firms will put their antennas on the towers. A maximum of around three antennas per tower can be put up. The company is looking at starting with 10,000-15,000 towers.
