The CPI for month of April is 6%

The Consumer Price Index is different from the Wholesale Price Index, which increased 1.76% in April to 150.6 points in comparison to March. WPI inflation was measured by capturing the annual rise in the index level. WPI was 8.66% in April, compared to 9.04% of March.

The actual inflation rate in terms of CPI will be known in January 2012, but if the average prices of 2010 are taken as a comparable figure, consumer’s prices rose 6% in April as the same in March. The WPI food index rose 2.46 per cent in April to 183.5 points. On the other hand, the food CPI rose just 0.84 per cent, to 107 points in April.

As per the released CPI data, consumer prices rose faster in rural India in compare to Urban India. CPI increased 8% in April compared to the average price level in 2010 a little higher than 7% of March. On the other hand prices in urban areas rose 5% in April compare to 4% in March.

The new CPI is anticipated to replicate the real movement of prices at the micro-level and help policymakers like the RBI in better framing of decisions. The new consumer indices cover five major groups -- food, beverages and tobacco; fuel and light; housing; clothing, bedding and footwear and miscellaneous items.  

India has 3 different segments of Consumer Price Indices, Agriculture labors, Rural labors and Industrial labors. The April numbers for all the 3 segments are yet to come.

For April month, with 111 points Mizoram witnessed the highest CPI and Manipur was the lowest with 102 points.
