India’s coal production during the first seven months of current fiscal stood at 315.7 million tonnes (MT), which was the half of set production target at 630.3 MT for FY15. In the last fiscal, the country produced 565.6 MT coal as against the target of 604.6 MT.

Coal and Power Minister Piyush Goyal reported that the issues like non-availability of environmental and forest clearances in time and delay in physical possession of land and resettlement and rehabilitation problem have been impacting the domestic coal production. However, the government is taking measures to augment coal production by facilitating environment and forest clearances, taking state government assistance in expediting land acquisition and coordinated efforts with Railways for movement of coal. Coal Ministry has planned to soon launch an electronic platform to address all regulatory hurdles related to coal mines. The government targets to double the domestic coal production to 1 billion tonnes in the next five years.

India, despite being world's fifth largest in terms of reserves and the third-largest producer of coal, has failed to keep pace with increasing domestic demand. At present, Indian coal demand is around 35 percent higher than domestic supply, resulting into a high deficit of which a huge part is being met by costly imports from Indonesia, South Africa and Australia. Coal shortage in the country has become a concern for Indian power sector as coal-fired plants account for 59% of India's installed electricity capacity.
