Kingfisher Airlines cancels 16 flights on Feb 23

24 Feb 2012 Evaluate

The Vijay Mallya-led Kingfisher Airlines cancelled as many as 16 flights out of Mumbai across sectors on Thursday. Despite an assurance to start operations according to a new schedule, Kingfisher failed to make any changes or send any fresh schedule to Mumbai airport or even travel agents in the city. However, late on Thursday, the airline's website put up the new schedule.

On Thursday, the air tickets from Mumbai to major destinations remained very high and few seats were available due to passenger rush. Only business class tickets on Kingfisher were affordable. A one way Mumbai-Delhi business class ticket for Friday was priced between Rs 23,000 and Rs 28,000 on all other carriers. Kingfisher was selling the same ticket for Rs 16,000. Similarly, a Mumbai-Bangalore ticket on Kingfisher was for Rs 13,900, while other carriers were selling it for Rs 18,000 and above. A Mumbai-Kolkata business class fare started at Rs 28,000 and went up to Rs 43,000.

In its report to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the airlines assured that it would present a new schedule and start truncated but planned operations from Wednesday. However, the same emerged as a gap.

Cash-strapped company in its status report to the regulator also stated that it has sufficient number of pilots, 510. In the new plan submitted to the regulator on Wednesday, the airline currently has only 28 aircraft which can make about 170 flights a day, while about 30 aircraft are currently grounded.

As per the revised and drastically pruned schedule of operations submitted by the airline to the regulator the number of daily flights have come down to 170 from more than 400 last year. The cash strapped airline is battling a severe cash crunch, high fuel costs and a mountain of debt and has struggled to keep its flights on air.
