R-Power to kick off Rosa unit by year-end

07 Dec 2009 Evaluate

Reliance Power is planning to commission the first phase of its 1,200-MW Rosa Power project in Uttar Pradesh before the end of December 2009, nearly three months ahead of schedule. The Rs 5,000-crore project is divided into two phases of 600 MW each. The company has also fast tracked completion of 600 MW capacity of the second phase. This phase is also expected to become fully-operational in the 11th Plan by March 2012, against earlier envisaged in the XIIth Plan. Rosa project is being brought on stream in the record time of 33 months, against normal commissioning time of 40 months.

This has been made possible by putting the project on fast track. The firm expeditiously obtained all the statutory and regulatory clearances and nods, took over the possession of the land and commenced construction at site within three months.

For the first phase, the company has signed a power purchase agreement with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation. In the second phase, the firm will sell half of the generation to UP and rest to outside the state. The second phase of the project has been financially closed, and the company has also placed orders for equipment.

The fuel for the coal fired plant would come from Jharkhand for which a long-term supply linkage has been given. A coal transportation agreement has also been signed with the Railways. For equipment, the company has selected Shanghai Electric (Group) Corporation, as EPC contractor for both the phases.

Rosa project would be the largest private sector investment in UP with investment outlay over Rs 6,000 crore. It will add around 20% to the existing generating capacity of the state, and will contribute to the reducing power deficit. It is also the first thermal independent power producer in power deficit Northern Region. crackcrack
