Gammon arm to set up boiler plant near Tiruchi

16 Dec 2009 Evaluate

A joint venture of ANSALDOcaldaie Boilers India (P) Ltd and the Tiruchi-based GB Engineering will put up a facility near Tiruchi to manufacture boilers for thermal power plants based on supercritical technology. ANSALDOcaldaie Boilers is a joint venture between Italian company Ansaldo — which is 50 per cent owned by Gammon India and GB Engineering. The latter has a 15 per cent stake in ANSALDOcaldaie Boilers.

The facility that is coming up at Tiruchi will be equipped to produce boilers for 2,000 MW a year. The facility will produce steam drum and other pressure parts, such as pipes. The joint venture will put in around Rs 150 crore to start with.

Ansaldo has, in the past, supplied boilers for electricity generation in India. It supplied 200 MW boilers for NTPC Ramagundam project, 500 MW boilers for NTPC's Farakka project and 210 MW equipment for Neyveli Lignite Corporation. But the Italian company has mostly been present in the industrial sector, where the boilers produce steam for industrial process and not for electricity generation. GB Engineering supported Ansaldo in the manufacture of these boilers.
