The Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik has requested the Centre to extend the cut-off date for crop insurance for non-loanee farmers under the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) during Kharif-2015 crop season. The Chief Minster enlightened that the agricultural work has been delayed due to uneven and deficient rainfall.
Patnaik urged in his letter that in order to help the maximum number of farmers to avail the benefits provided under crop insurance scheme of the government under NAIS the cut-off date may be further extended to August 31, 2015 instead of July 31, 2015.
The Government of India introduced in 1999-2000, a scheme titled ‘National Agricultural Insurance Scheme’ (NAIS) or ‘Rashtriya Krishi Bima Yojana’ (RKBY). NAIS envisages coverage of all food crops (cereals and pulses), oilseeds, horticultural and commercial crops. It covers all farmers, both loanees and non-loanees, under the scheme.
