Tata Group has forayed into marketing essential commodities like pulses under its brand. The group’s agro-chemical arms Tata Chemicals and Rallis India will procure pulses from farmers and sell it in the local market, which has an annual consumption appetite of about 20 million tonne.
Initially, the company will sell four varieties of pulses under Tata’s ishakti brand — moong, toor, chana and urad and later expand to other varieties. Rallis will look after the farming facilities and procurement, while Tata Chemicals will supply and market the product through its already existing salt marketing network that has access to over 1.5 million retail stores across the country.
The company looks at targeting 5 lakh tonne per annum over a period of five years. Banded pulses comprise about 4-5% of the total market and no one particular brand has presence at a national level.crackcrack
