L&T power biz gets another order from Qatar

21 Jul 2011 Evaluate

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has bagged yet another engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth Rs 1,210 crore from the Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA). The order is for supply and construction of 13 extra-high voltage substations in Qatar, and is the largest such for the company's power unit anywhere in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Qatar is expanding its power transmission system apart from other infrastructure development initiatives. L&T typically bids for the infrastructure projects out of India, but uses its base in neighbouring Dubai to bid and execute projects in the power segment. The current order is similar to the one L&T had recently executed for KAHRAMAA—six 66 kV substations – except in terms of scale.

The current contract also covers design and construction of civil buildings with utilities such as air conditioning, fire protection and lighting systems. L&T's global order book for power transmission and distribution was Rs 6,100 crore, while it was Rs 9,600 crore within India.crackcrack
