Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Minister of State for External Affairs General (retd) V.K. Singh were among those who paid tributes to war veteran Lt. Gen. J.F.R. Jacob. Parrikar said that Lt. Gen Jacob was a very upright man, and they developed a special bonding when he was the Governor of Goa.
Gen. Singh said that ‘His demise is a huge loss, even though he was 92. We want good people to live longer.’ When asked to share a war time anecdote with Lt. Gen. Jacob, Gen. Singh said that 'he was in Calcutta, and I was at the front.'
Lt. Gen. Jacob breathed his last here on Wednesday morning after a prolonged illness. Born in the Bengal Presidency under British India, Lt. Gen. Jacob joined the army at the age of 19 and also fought in World War II and the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 before he retired in 1978. He was best known for his role in India's victory in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 and the liberation of Bangladesh. He also authored the book 'Surrender at Dacca' in which he explained the surrender of 90,000 Pakistani troops in 1971. Post retirement, he also served as the Governor of Goa and Punjab.
