Sugar production in India, the world's second-largest producer and biggest consumer, rose by 7% to 110.90 lakh tons till January 15 during the marketing year ending September, as mills started crushing operations early. As per the data of Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) India's sugar output stood at 103.82 lakh tons in the same period of the 2014-15 marketing year (October-September).The sugar mills have started their cane crushing operations earlier this year, and, therefore, despite the lower availability of sugarcane as compared to last year, sugar production till now is higher.
The sugar production in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra in the current season till January 15, is higher by 3.4 lakh tons, 2 lakh tons and 1 lakh tons, respectively. Maharashtra has crushed about 415.9 lakh tons of sugarcane with 168 sugar mills under crushing operation. Till January 15, Maharashtra has produced 44 lakh tons of sugar with 10.6% recovery. Last year till date, 173 sugar mills were operational which crushed about 404.5 lakh tons of sugarcane to produce 43 lakh tons of sugar.
In second largest sugar producer Uttar Pradesh, 116 sugar mills are in operation during the current season, which have produced 27.07 lakh tons of sugar till January 15. In 2014-15 sugar season, as on January 15, 2015, 118 sugar mills were in operation and they had produced 25 lakh tons of sugar. Karnataka has produced 21.12 lakh tons of sugar till January 15 and there are 64 sugar mills in operation as on that date. In 2014-15, 64 sugar mills in operation as on 15th January 2015, had produced 17.71 lakh tons of sugar. In Tamil Nadu, 25 sugar mills are in operation and they have produced 1.60 lakh tons of sugar till January 15, 2016. This is 0.50 lakh ton higher than the sugar production of corresponding period of last year, when 20 sugar mills were in operation.
