Tata Power Delhi Distribution (TPDDL), a joint venture (JV) of Tata Power and the Government of Delhi, has launched a ‘Smart Grid Lab’ for demonstration of various foundational and advanced operational technologies, information technologies and benefits derived by convergence of information and operational technologies. The focus will be towards hands-on demonstration of new technologies, products and operations for different organisations and institutions including utilities. In the smart grid lab, visitors can see various smart technologies that have been implemented in the field by TPDDL. The smart grid journey starts with the advanced distribution management system (ADMS) and represents one of its kind implementation in India. ADMS would replace the conventional SCADA-DMS-OMS with features like integration of smart meter data / distributed generation integration and single data model from GIS. The other display depicts the self-healing concept, which shows how intelligently the network fault is identified and how healthy portions are restored automatically, ensuring a high level of reliability. This feature is followed by two smart meter technologies the power line communication (PLC) based meters and RF mesh.
The purpose of TPDDL’s smart grid lab is to test and operationalise the implementation of advanced technologies before they are deployed in the field and also to serve as a forum to demonstrate advanced technologies to national and regional regulators, state discoms, etc. The company also allows its partners to use the smart grid lab to showcase their products and solutions to other Indian power utilities.
