Reliance Power’s KUMPP gets registered with CDM-EB of UNFCCC

11 Jul 2011 Evaluate

Reliance Power’s imported coal based 3960 MW Krishnapatnam Ultra Mega Power Project (KUMPP), now has been registered with Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board (CDM-EB) of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). With this registration, the company has now become the largest supplier of CERs among the Indian power generation companies with 3.48 million CERs.

CDM registration allows Reliance Power’s KUMPP earn Certified Emission Reductions (CERs), each equivalent to one tone of CO2. These CERs can be traded and sold, and will result in significant revenues for Reliance Power.

Moreover, with the CDM registration of Krishnapatnam UMPP, the company has further strengthened its position as the world leader with CDM power generation capacity of 7920 MW. Meanwhile, Reliance Power’s 3960 MW Sasan UMPP became the first UMPP to be registered with UNFCC for carbon credits earlier this year.

The company is expected to generate approximately 34.8 CERs during the initial 10 years of the operations with the expected incremental revenue from the sale of CERs of over Rs 3100 crore.
