In the last three days, bids for highway projects of 1,144 km have opened up. With these, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has inched closer to awarding 6,600 km of highway projects in the current fiscal - a record high and 28 per cent growth over the previous fiscal.

The highway bidders win the rights to design the highway, raise finance and spend money to develop the project, and operate it for the pre-decided concession period. In return, the developer gets to keep the toll charges for the entire concession period.
