India’s tea exports stood at 42.06 million kg during April-June period

India’s tea exports stood at 42.06 million kg during the period between April and June of the current financial year, 2.56% rise from the corresponding period last year. As per data compiled by the apex industry body the Tea Board of India, the country’s tea shipments to the world has risen by an impressive 14% to Rs 856.57 crore for the first quarter of the current fiscal as compared to Rs 751.44 crore in the corresponding period last year.

The average realization from tea exports has shot up by over 11% to Rs 203.65 a kg for the April-June quarter 2016 from Rs 183.23 a kg in the same period last year. The increase in the tea exports from India has been mainly on the account of high demand of countries like Iran, Russia Pakistan, Germany, Bangladesh, Poland and UAE.

India is the largest producer and consumer of black tea in the world, but not the largest per capita consumer. India ranks 43rd in the global ranking in average per capita tea consumption with 0.73 kgs compared with 7.54 kgs in Turkey, 4.34 kgs in Morocco, 2.74 kgs in United Kingdom and 1.01 kgs in Pakistan.
