Maharashtra government has decided to give a one-time grant of Rs 100 on every quintal of onion sold by farmers in state. The decision to provide the relief was taken at the State Cabinet meeting keeping in mind the steep decline in prices that has adversely hit onion growers.
Those farmers who have sold their produce in July and August at the local Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), controlled markets will get the benefit. Farmers who sold onion produce in APMCs from July 1 to August 31 are eligible to avail this grant. Each farmer will get relief up to 200 quintals.
The farmers are in deep distress due to surplus production of the crop, which has resulted in onion being sold at 5 paisa per kg recently in the wholesale market of Nashik. At that price, the farmers are unable to recover even the basic cost of cultivation.
