India reviewing free trade agreement with partners: Nirmala Sitharaman

08 Sep 2016 Evaluate

India is reviewing the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) signed with its trading partners following concerns raised by domestic industry about the benefits of these agreements for them. Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that many industry representatives have conveyed that FTAs signed earlier have not necessarily benefited Indian companies more and termed lack of awareness regarding these agreements as one of the reasons behind it. Further, exporters have not had the opportunity to fully exploit the FTAs to their favour. As a result, many exports that could have happened to these countries have really not happened.

The minister said that we are reviewing the FTAs, along with industry sectors and industry is participating in it. She said that a pact with 10-nation bloc Asean was signed separately for goods and services. According to Sitharaman, services is important for India as it contributes over 55% to the country's GDP and unfortunately India was not being able to leverage its strength in deals such as the one with the 10-nation Association of South-East Asian Nations. The domestic steel industry has expressed concern over rising imports from Japan and Korea and demanded the removal of this commodity from the purview of the FTAs.

Regarding FTA with the UK, she added that they have put in place a working group which will go into the details of India’s relationship with UK in order to see where possibilities exist for furthering trade ties. She made it clear that FTA negotiations formally can happen only after the UK's exit from the EU.

India has implemented FTAs with several countries, including Asean, Japan, Korea and Singapore. It is also negotiating similar agreements with the European Union, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
