BEML tanks as CBI book’s chairman for cheating and graft

The slew of depressing events seems to be ceaseless for the defence engaged PSU - BEML. After the company’s alleged role in the army involved Tatra Truck scam, now its chairman V R S Natarajan has been booked by the CBI for his alleged role in cheating, criminal conspiracy and corruption in hiring a private consultancy. The investigating agency has carried out search operations at his Bangalore residence.

This has pushed the stock in the red zone. BEML is currently trading at Rs. 552.25, down by 11.15 points or 1.98% from its previous closing of Rs. 563.40 on the BSE.

The scrip opened at Rs. 560.50 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 560.50 and Rs. 536.00 respectively. So far 6960 shares were traded on the counter.

The BSE group 'B' stock of face value Rs. 10 has touched a 52 week high of Rs. 734.60 on 25-Apr-2011 and a 52 week low of Rs. 413.00 on 19-Aug-2011.

Last one week high and low of the scrip stood at Rs. 592.85 and Rs. 536.00 respectively. The current market cap of the company is Rs. 2296.69 crore.

The promoters holding in the company stood at 54.03% while Institutions and Non-Institutions held 34.03% and 11.94% respectively.

Natarajan is accused for awarding a contract for the implementation of the enterprises resource planning project, during 2004-09. Besides chairman, the director of Coimbatore-based Astral Consultants - C S Srivatsan has also been booked. Investigating agency has alleged that Natarajan is a part of cabal to award contract worth Rs 40 crore to Astral Consultants.
