Retrospective amendment to I-T Act likely to yield around Rs 40,000 crore

The Indian government’s controversial proposal to amend the Income Tax Act with retrospective effect to bring into tax net Vodafone-type deals is expected to yield Rs 35,000-40,000 crore, as per the government. Further the government has clarified that the figure is only an estimate and the exact amount will be determined only when assessing officer completes assessment proceedings.

The proposal which was introduced by the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee aims at taxing Vodafone-type merger and acquisition deals that involve domestic assets. The proposal has generated lot of debate, with various global bodies claiming that the move would hurt foreign investment.

If the amendment is approved by Parliament, the British telecom giant Vodafone, would be liable to pay Rs 11,000 crore tax for its acquisition of Hutchison's stake in Hutchison Essar in May, 2007.
