Production of crude oil and natural gas dips in March 2012

25 Apr 2012 Evaluate

The production of crude oil and natural gas has dropped in the month of March 2012, as per data from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. For natural gas, this is the 16th straight month of decline and it has fallen by 10.1% in March. Crude oil on the other hand has dipped by 2.9%.

The main reason for the dip in crude oil has been the production from Assam fields, which has fallen by 100%. Also important is Mumbai High Fields' 4.7% lower output for the month. March 2012 crude oil production dropped to 3.218 million tonnes (mt), as compared to 3.315 million tonnes of oil production in March 2011.

Natural gas production was even more disappointing with March 2012 output slumping by 10.1% to 3.849 billion cubic meter from 4.282 billion cubic meter in the same month last year. Sharp drop in Reliance's Krishna Godavari D6 block is attributed to be one of the main reason for lower domestic production in March.

Petroleum product consumption in March was up 5.1% year-on-year at 13.499 mt. Diesel sales rose 10.3%, while petrol consumption was up 11.5%. Naphtha and natural gas combined saw an increase of 19.5% year-on-year.
