EGoM meet on sugar exports deferred

26 Apr 2012 Evaluate

The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) meeting that was supposed to discuss the issue of sugar exports has been postponed. The next date has not been decided as yet. The meeting was scheduled to discuss the modalities of the shipment of 1 million tonnes of sugar in 2011-12 marketing year (October-September). The issue of allocating additional 8 million tonnes of foodgrains to BPL families to clear storage space for new crop was also on the agenda.

So far the government has approved the exports of 3 million tonnes of sugar out of which notifications for 2 million tonnes have been issued. The modalities related to the exports of additional 1 million tonnes were to be decided by the EGoM.

Sugar producers are of the view that there is more scope for sugar exports as the domestic demand is pegged at 22 million tonnes and the output is expected to be anywhere around 25-26 million tonnes.

India is the world’s second largest producer and the largest consumer of sugar in the world. As per government estimates, the country is expected to produce 25.2 million tonnes of sugar in the current marketing year. The private sugar industry body, Indian Sugar Mills Association, has estimated the output at 26 million tonnes in the current season, whereas the International Sugar Organisation has pegged the production in the country at 25.8 million tonnes.

Sugar producers are keen that the excess sugar be allowed to be exported so that opening stocks of sugar for the next year get reduced to 5- 5.5 million tonnes, as compared with 6.8 million tonne in 2011-12. Good production as well as 6.8 million tonne of opening stocks in 2011-12 improved domestic supplies and kept prices subdued, dragging down mills’ sales realization.
