Rajasthan govt abruptly scraps BHEL’s Rs 12,000 crore power gear tenders

The Rajasthan government has abruptly scrapped tenders worth Rs 12,000 crore that were bagged by Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) more than a year ago for two big tickets thermal power projects in the state. The development comes at a time when BHEL is grappling with slowdown in its order book. Owing to an overall sluggishness in the power sector, the company's order book more than halved to Rs 22,096 crore last fiscal compared to 2010-11 period.

Interestingly, Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (RVUN), a state government company, scrapped EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) tenders for upcoming new super critical units of Suratgarh and Chhabra thermal power stations, despite both projects having tied-up coal supplies, along with most other requisite clearances, coming at a time when a majority of power projects across the country are languishing for want of fuel.

State-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) had emerged as the lowest bidder for both the turnkey contracts, with BGR Energy coming in a distant second in the international competitive bids for the two major projects - the 1,320 MW Suratgarh and 1320 MW Chhabra projects - called by the state-owned Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (RRVUNL) in 2009.
