BEML stock plunges on Karnataka police action

The beleaguered defence company - Bharat Earth Movers (BEML) is once again in news for wrong reason, this time accused for allegedly cheating Dreams Logistic Company India for Rs 35 crore. The Karnataka state police have registered a case against the company accusing its Chairman and Managing Director VRS Natarajan along with two others. Following this complaint, the police have frozen the bank accounts of the company.

BEML is currently trading at Rs. 471.00, down by 41.40 points or 8.08% from its previous closing of Rs. 512.40 on the BSE.

The scrip opened at Rs. 507.50 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 511.00 and Rs. 444.90 respectively. So far 353493 shares were traded on the counter.

The BSE group 'B' stock of face value Rs. 10 has touched a 52 week high of Rs. 702.15 on 16-Mar-2012 and a 52 week low of Rs. 413.00 on 19-Aug-2011.

Last one week high and low of the scrip stood at Rs. 522.95 and Rs. 444.90 respectively. The current market cap of the company is Rs. 1971.03 crore.

The promoters holding in the company stood at 54.03% while Institutions and Non-Institutions held 34.03% and 11.94% respectively.

The complainant - Vivek Hebbar, MD of Dreams Logistic Company has stated that his company had entered into the agreement, in December 2010, with Prasanna Ghotage, a trader and Vaman Kumar, CEO of Pune-based Nordbell Commercial. The agreement was to invest Rs 35.1 crore for the purchase of one lakh metric tonnes of iron ore, as Dreams Logistic Company deals in iron ore. However, out of total 96,500 MT ore slated to send to buyers, only 71,920 MT was loaded on the vessel that of lower quality. Hebbar claims that the duo had sold the remaining ore in China with the help of BEML MD.

Besides this, the company’s alleged role in the army involved Tatra Truck scam is being probed. Also, the chairman V R S Natarajan had been booked by the CBI for his alleged role in cheating, criminal conspiracy and corruption in hiring a private consultancy. The investigating agency has carried out search operations at his Bangalore residence.

Natarajan is accused for awarding a contract for the implementation of the enterprises resource planning project, during 2004-09. Besides chairman, the director of Coimbatore based Astral Consultants C S Srivatsan has also been booked. Investigating agency has alleged that Natarajan is a part of cabal to award contract worth Rs 40 crore to Astral Consultants.
