India's Pepper exports during the period of 2016-17 was seen to decline by about 37% to 17600 tons which valued at Rs 1141.89 crore when compared to 28100 tons valued at Rs 1730.42 crore during 2015-16. In value terms the decline was about 34%. While during April-February period of 2016-17, the imports have increased by about 7.9% to 15644.19 tons when compared to the corresponding period last year.
During 2016, India imported about 11180 tons of Pepper from Vietnam alone, and was seen as one of the top five major importing countries. The main reason for the decline in export is believed to be the high prices of the Indian Pepper which is much above the price of other regions. The increase in imports is believed to be on the back of cheap pepper available from Vietnam through Sri Lanka, and the government is taking various measures to prevent illegal imports of Pepper.
