Most of the Asian equity benchmarks are trading up in the early deals on Tuesday after Wall Street closed mixed. Investors are cautious as they eye the European Central Bank forum on central banking currently underway in Portugal and an address by Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen at an event in London later in the day. Meanwhile, Japan's Nikkei share average edged up to hover near two-year highs as a weaker yen helped exporters rise, while financial stocks rebounded from Monday's declines. Among the other Asian markets, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong are all modestly higher. Bucking the trend, Shanghai is edging lower. The markets in Malaysia and Indonesia remain closed in observance of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Nikkei 225 added 77.01 points or 0.38% to 20,230.36, Hang Seng gained 22.66 points or 0.09% to 25,894.55, Taiwan Weighted increased 7.4 points or 0.07% to 10,521.36, KOSPI Index rose 5.18 points or 0.22% to 2,393.84, and Straits Times was up by 13.95 points or 0.43% to 3,223.42.
On the flip side, Shanghai Composite was down by 2.78 points or 0.09% to 3,182.66.
