Addressing the annual conference of Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), India’s Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee urged the taxmen to put together a transparent and hassle-free tax regime which would persuade the assessee to voluntarily comply with statutory requirements and dissuades any breach of regulatory provisions and procedures.

Moreover, the finance minister congratulating revenue officials for their spirited performance remained hopeful that the department would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the indirect tax collection targets for the current financial year would not only be met but handsomely exceed. Despite a slowdown in growth and the duty cuts effected on petroleum products in June 2011, the indirect tax collection of Rs 3,92,781 crore (excluding cess) was only marginally short of the revised estimates of Rs 3,94,000 crore in 2011-12.

Underscoring the fact that a strong indirect tax administration is fundamental to the development of a nation’s economy, Mukherjee admitted that government’s fiscal measure, by way of reduced rates of excise and customs duties, significantly dented revenue collections in the recent past. However, the finance ministry has raised the target for indirect tax collections in 2012-13 by 27 percent from previous year’s figures and placed at Rs 4,99,694 crore since the central excise and service rate have been hiked from 10 to 12 percent.
