Government releases Rs 117.64 crore to States under RKVY

The Government has released another Rs 117.64 crore to different states under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) for promoting more production of nutrient-rich cereals such as bajra, jowar, ragi and millets, to upgrade their processing technologies and create awareness about their health benefits. The scheme is yielding good response and according to the fourth estimate of the Agriculture Ministry, the production of coarse cereals has jumped to 42.22 million tonnes 2010-11 crop year from 33.55 tonnes in the year ago period.

Under the scheme so far, the Government has released Rs 91.48 crore to Maharashtra, Rs 87.68 crore to Rajasthan, Rs 26.57 crore to Karnataka and Rs 21.66 crore to Madhya Pradesh. While, funds for Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal too has been released.

The RKVY was launched in August, 2007 to achieve 4% annual growth in the agriculture sector by a holistic development of agriculture and allied sectors. The scheme aims at incentivising states to increase public investment in agriculture and allied sectors and enable them to generate additional growth in agriculture and allied sectors through better planning and by undertaking appropriate growth-oriented projects to achieve this goal.

Seven new sub-schemes have been introduced from the current financial year. These are initiative on vegetable clusters, accelerated fodder development programme, rainfed area development programme, and promotion of oil palm, nutri-cereals, National Mission for Protein Supplements and saffron mission.   Two sub-schemes, which were introduced last year, are for Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India and Special Initiative for Pulses and Oilseeds in Dryland Areas by organising 60, 000 Oilseeds and Pulses Villages in Rainfed Areas.
