US markets end lower on Thursday amid trade war concerns

01 Jun 2018 Evaluate

The US markets ended lower on Thursday, after showing sharp recovery in the previous session, amid trade war concerns. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said that the US will impose tariffs on steel and aluminum products from the EU, Mexico and Canada beginning Friday. Canada and Mexico had previously received temporary exemptions as negotiators worked on a new version of the North American Free Trade Agreement, or Nafta. The move to impose the tariffs represents the latest in a series of protectionist moves by President Donald Trump and has drawn threats of retaliation by some of the major US allies. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that Ottawa would impose a 25% tariff on steel imports from the US, a 10% tariff on aluminum and other US goods. Moreover, Mexico said that it would target several US goods in response.

On the economic front, a day ahead of the release of the closely watched monthly jobs report, the Labor Department released a report showing a bigger than expected decrease in first-time claims for US unemployment benefits in the week ended May 26, 2018. The report said initial jobless claims fell to 221,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 234,000, while street had expected jobless claims to dip to 228,000. Besides, according to a separate report released by the Commerce Department, personal income in the US increased in line with economist estimates in the month of April, while personal spending climbed by more than anticipated.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) also released a report unexpectedly showing a sharp decrease in pending home sales in the month of April. NAR said its pending home sales index tumbled by 1.3% to 106.4 in April after rising by 0.6% to 107.2 in March, while economists had expected pending home sales to increase by 0.4%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 251.94 points or 1.02 percent to 24415.84 and the S&P 500 declined 18.74 points or 0.69% to 2705.27 and the Nasdaq was down by 20.34 points or 0.27 percent to 7442.12.
