Sowing area falls to 45.55 lakh hectares in Gujarat

This season the total sowing area under kharif has reached to 45.55 lakh hectares in Gujarat as compared to 60 lakh hectares a year ago. This is a decline of 24% so far as compared with year-ago period and can be attributed to the fact that the state has received 65% less rainfall this year. As per the state officials for the past two years the rain pattern has been somewhat erratic in the state.

The Gujarat state is experiencing a 65% deficient rainfall so far according to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Saurashtra and Kutch regions which are regarded as a major agri production belt and accounts for nearly 70% of the total cotton production in the state too have experienced 77% shortage in rainfall. Also, groundnut and castor seed are major crops apart from cotton in the region.

During the entire season last year the total area under kharif crop was 89.43 lakh hectares. The farmers continue sowing till mid-August while for crops such as castor and tobacco sowing continues late till September.

Compared with 25.7 lakh hectares in the year-ago period, the area under coverage for cotton has declined to 19.83 lakh hectares so far. Last year the total acreage under cotton in the state stood at over 30 lakh hectares. Besides, compared to the corresponding year last year the oilseeds crop such as castor and groundnut are also lagging behind and their acreage have declined to 11 lakh hectares so far against 16 lakh hectares.
