Sugar output increase marginally to 3.97 MT during October to November

Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has reported that sugar production climbed marginally to 3.97 MT till November 30, 2018, in the current sugar year (October to September) compared to last year same period's 3.91 MT. In current year, 415 sugar mills are crushing compared to 450 last year. Sugar cane crushing in India has gained momentum and mills have produced more sugar than a year ago due to higher processing in the second biggest producing western state of Maharashtra.

In Maharashtra, 167 sugar mills have started their crushing operations and are running in full swing and as on November 30, they have produced 1.8 MT, which is 21% higher than the output during the same period last year. In Uttar Pradesh 109 sugar mills were crushing sugarcane on November 30, and have produced 9,50,000 tonne while 108 sugar mills were crushing in the state producing 1.31 MT. About 63 mills in Karnataka were crushing as November 30, and 7,93,000 tonne of sugar was produced compared to 62 mills and 7,02,000 tonne of the sweetener in the same period last year. Crushing operations in all the other states have also begun, picking up at a slow pace.

ISMA also projected around 10% rise, to mark a new record of 35.5 MT in the next marketing year. While, it estimated to attain 32.25 MT in the current 2017-18 marketing year. India is the world's second largest in cane sugar production.
