Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi has said that India imported about 235.2 million tonne (MT) coal of worth Rs 1.7 lakh crore, for Financial Year 2018-19 (FY19). In the FY18, the country had imported 208.2 MT of the dry fuel valued at Rs 1.3 lakh crore, while it imported 190.9 MT coal worth Rs 1 lakh crore during FY17.
Joshi emphasized on the country's insufficiency to meet its requirements, despite the efforts made by the coal sector. Availability of coking coal in the country is limited, which is an essential input for steel making. Further, power plants designed on low ash imported coal is likely to import more coal for their requirements.
The total estimated coal resources in the country is 319.02 billion tonne. Every year about 3-5 billion tonne of proved resources were being added through fresh exploration of the coal inventory in India. The minister added that if present rate of extraction prevails in the country, the coal would last for several decades.
