Production of Vegetables and Fruits estimated at 1,505.86 and 752.74 lakh tonnes during 2011-12

29 Aug 2012 Evaluate

The production of vegetables in the country is estimated to be around 1,505.86 lakh tonnes while the production of fruits is estimated to be around 752.74 lakh tonnes during 2011-12. This is a marginal rise compared to 1,465.54 lakh tonnes of vegetables and 748.78 lakh tonnes of fruits during 2010-11, as per the written information provided by Harish Rawat, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries.

With a view of enhancing production and productivity of horticulture crops including fruits and vegetables, the Government of India has been implementing Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States (HMNEH) and National Horticulture Mission (NHM) in the remaining States of the country.

Under HMNEH and NHM, assistance is provided for establishment of nurseries, seed production for vegetables, enhancing quality production and productivity of fruits and vegetables through area expansion, protected cultivation, canopy management, integrated nutrient and water management, integrated pest management, rejuvenation of senile orchards, mechanization, Human Resource Development, etc.

In the event of a bumper crop when there is surplus in the market there is possibility of prices to fall below economic levels/ cost of production which in turn leads to distress sale by the horticultural growers. Therefore for procurement of various horticultural commodities Agriculture Ministry is implementing Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) upon request of State/ UT Governments, with a purpose to protect these horticultural growers.

Besides, losses, if any, incurred by the procuring agencies are shared equally between the central government and the state government concerned on 50:50 basis while the losses are in ratio of 75:25 in case of North-Eastern States. In Karnataka during 2011-12, MIS was sanctioned for procurement of 54,000 MT of onion at the market intervention price of Rs 6,000 per MT with effect from December 14, 2011 to January 14, 2012.
