Asian markets end mostly lower on Monday

12 Aug 2019 Evaluate

Asian markets ended mostly lower on Monday amid uncertainty surrounding the trade tensions between the United States and China and a slowdown in the global economy. US President Donald Trump on Friday said he was not ready to make a deal with China and even called the September round of trade talks into question. However, the People's Bank of China set its daily midpoint reference for yuan trading at 7.0211 per dollar. That was weaker than Friday's setting but stronger than market expectations. Chinese shares ended higher ahead of a slew of key data due out on Wednesday. Seoul shares ended higher amid bargain hunting after the past week's heavy selling, while the Korean won hit its lowest level against the US dollar in over three years. The markets in Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore are closed for public holidays.
