India’s horticulture crop output likely to rise by 0.69% to 313.85 MT in 2018-19

The Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare in its Third Advanced Estimate (2018-19) of Area and Production of various Horticulture Crops has showed that India’s horticulture crop production is likely to rise by 0.69% to 313.85 million tonnes (MT) in 2018-19 from 311.71 MT in 2017-18. The report said as area under horticulture crops has remained broadly at the same level, the higher production owes mainly to productivity gains.

Area under horticulture crops is estimated at 25.49 million hector in 2018-19 over 25.43 million hector in previous year. As per the data, overall increase is observed in production of fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers and honey whereas decrease is observed in production of plantation and aromatics & medicinal crops as compared to last year. Fruits output is estimated to be around 98.57 MT, compared to 97.36 MT last year. Spices output is estimated to be around 9.22 MT, which is higher than the production last year.

Besides, vegetables production is estimated to be around 185.88 MT, which is 0.81% higher than the production last year. Among the vegetables, onion production is estimated to be around 23.48 MT, which is 0.95% higher than the production last year. Potato production is estimated to be around 53.03 MT, which is 3.4% higher than the production last year. Tomato production is estimated to be around 19.39 MT, which is 1.8%, lower than the production last year.
