08 Nov 2019 Evaluate

The Cotton Association of India (CAI) in its recent report estimated that the country is likely to attain 354.5 lakh bales (each of 170 kg) yield for 2019-20, up by 42.5 lakh bales, compared to 312 lakh bales in 2018-19. The estimate of 13% rise in cotton output is mainly on account of higher acreage compared to that of last season. Good monsoon this year has also favored cotton cultivation, but some areas of cotton production were damaged due to flooding on account of excess rains. As per report, the total cotton cultivation for the current kharif season is up by 7 lakh hectares at 127.67 compared to last year's 121 lakh hectares of acreage.

In the new season, the total cotton arrivals for the month of October 2019 is likely to be about 13.40 lakh bales. Meanwhile, the annual balance sheet shows that total cotton supply for the season ending on September 2020, is at 403 lakh bales. The domestic consumption is estimated at 315 lakh bales, while the exports are estimated at 42 lakh bales.

However, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its recent report projected that India's cotton crop would notch 305 lakh US bales (each of 217.7 kg), which is 390 lakh India bales (each of 170 kg). Harvested area in India is been estimated at a record 12.9 million hectares in 2019-20, as domestic prices and internal support price prospects favor cotton over competing crops.
