India’s top six cities to add 50,000 hotel rooms in 5-6 years

Despite a decline of 4% in the average occupancy rate and dip of about 5% in the average room rate in 2011, a report on ‘Indian Hospitality Story 2012 & Beyond’ shows that top six cities of India is expected to see a total of 50,000 new hotel rooms across categories in the next 5- 6 years. Delhi NCR is set to see the highest number of rooms about 17,550, followed by Mumbai with 10,200 and Bangalore with 9,400.

Akshay Kulkarni, Regional Director of Hospitality of South and South East Asia, Cushman & Wakefield pointed out that Indian hospitality sector has been experiencing strong demand from foreign as well as domestic tourists. The new rooms will be added by concentrating growth areas around airports, commercial and industrial corridors and SEZs.

Chennai hotels have 64% occupancy level, registering highest in six top cities of India. While, Hyderabad has been a wilting market for hotel performance, due to some internal disturbances in the region. The occupancy level in the first half of 2012 was 53% in the country with the top six cites witnessing an average occupancy of 58% with an average room rate (ARR) of Rs 5,400 in 2012.
