Kharif output to fall short of target by 11.84 million tonnes

25 Sep 2012 Evaluate

Kharif crops production is expected to fall short of the target by 11.84 million tonnes (MT) to 117.18 million tonnes this year, as per the first advance estimates of production of Kharif crops released by Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar. The foodgrains production in the current season is however, higher than the expectations considering the truant monsoon rains.

Besides, this production estimate of 117.18 MT is higher compared to the average of the first advance estimates of the last five years, which stands at 113 MT. The final estimates are also generally 5 to 10% higher than the first estimates. On the other hand, the current estimates are lower by 1.68 MT or about 1.4% when compared to the average of final estimates, which stands at 118.86 MT.

As per the first advance estimates, kharif rice production is expected to be 85.59 MT as compared to the target of 89 MT. In the past five years, the output was 85.51 MT. Further, on account of loss in area coverage under bajra and maize in the states of Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Rajasthan, the estimated production of Coarse Cereals is lower than average production by 3.65 MT.

Also mainly due to shortfall in moong and other kharif pulses, the estimated production of kharif pulses is lower than the average production by 0.45 MT. While due to decline in the production of groundnut, the total production of kharif oilseeds is estimated at 18.78 MT, which is lower than the average production by 0.61 MT despite the fact that there is a significant increase in estimated production of soyabean.

Further, cotton output is expected to be 334 lakh bales of 170 kg each, against 352 lakh bales in 2011-12. Sugarcane output is likely to be 335.33 million tonnes, compared with 357.66 million tonnes in 2011-12. The production of Jute is also estimated to be marginally higher than the average production.
