Asian markets trade mostly lower on Thursday

Most of the Asian equity benchmarks are trading lower on Thursday, after the signing of the phase 1 US-China trade deal, and as market participants awaited for China's economic data for 2019, which is ought to be out on Friday , 17 th January 2020. Moreover, Trump administration's decision to leave the 25% tariff on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports in place till the second phase of the trade deal, also pressured the investors’ sentiment. Japan's Nikkei is edged lower with a stronger yen, despite better than expected Japanese core machinery orders data. Among the Asian markets, Taiwan, Indonesia, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Malaysia are in negative territory. Bucking the trend, Singapore and South Korea are in positive note.

Nikkei 225 down 1.63 points or 0.01% to 23,914.95, Hang Seng decreased 21.27 points or 0.07% to 28,752.32, Taiwan Weighted curtailed 45.55 points or 0.38% to 12,046.33, Jakarta Composite diminished by 4.49 points or 0.07% to 6,278.88, Shanghai narrowed 8.66 points or 0.28% to 3,081.38 and FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI slipped 5.97 points or 0.38% to 1,579.17.

On the flip side, Straits Times up 7.09 points or 0.22% to 3,264.07, and KOSPI Index widened 4.83 points or 0.22% to 2,235.81.
