Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) in its latest report stated that India's sugar production has declined by 24% to 141.12 lakh tonne during October-January, 2019-20, as against 185.59 lakh tonne in the year-ago period. The decline was mainly due to the output crunch in the highest production state - Maharashtra. The sugar marketing year is from October to September.

The sugar output in Maharashtra in the first four months of the 2019-20 marketing year is estimated at 34.64 lakh tonne compared with 70.99 lakh tonne in the corresponding period of the previous year. In Karnataka, production fell to 27.94 lakh tonne from 33.76 lakh tonne. Though, Uttar Pradesh's sugar production in the October-January period rose to 54.96 lakh tonne from 52.86 lakh tonne.

As per projections of ISMA, India will produce 260 lakh tonne sugar for 2019-20, a dip of 70 lakh tonne compared to last season. The estimates are based after accounting for the diversion of sugarcane juice and 'B' heavy molasses into ethanol, which will reduce about 8.5 lakh tonne of sugar production. The industrial body noted a rise of almost 7-8 lakh tonne in sugar sales. And it has foreseen that the sugar sales by sugar mills in the current season to be around 260 lakh tonne.
