Cotton exports are likely to witness a decline of about 46% to 7 million bales in the 2012-13 marketing year due to adequate global stocks. About 65% of Indian exports are to China whose imports are likely to be lower this time as their crop is good, as well as they are having majority of the global stocks with them. The weak global demand is likely to affect the exports of Indian Cotton.
The board under the Textile Ministry advises government on matters relate to production, consumption and marketing of cotton in the country decided to firm up its initial estimates on cotton availability for domestic and export purpose in the 2012-13. Though, Cotton production is likely to be lower by over 5% at 334 lakh bales (of 170 kg each) compared to 353 lakh bales due to deficient rains in Gujarat. Cotton production is expected to be around 18 lakh bales in Punjab, 24 lakh bales in Haryana and 16 lakh bales in Rajasthan. The total output in the central zone is likely to be 182 lakh bales which include 85 lakh bales from Gujarat, 80 lakh bales in Maharashtra and 17 lakh bales in Madhya Pradesh.
India is the world's second-biggest cotton producer and it had shipped around 12.8 million bales in the 2011-12 (October-September).
