Rupee strengthens against US dollar on Friday

Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Friday tracking firm domestic equities and weakness in American currency, although escalating tensions between the United States and China, foreign fund outflows and rising corona virus cases weighed on the rupee and restricted its gain. The Trump administration is considering banning travel to the United States by all members of the Chinese Communist Party and their families, a move that would worsen already tense Sino-US relations. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,091.08 crore on Thursday, exchange data showed. Health ministry data showed the death toll in India due the corona virus rose to 25,602 and the number of infections rose to 1,003,832, while the number of cases around the world has crossed 1.37 crore with the death toll topped at 5.89 lakh.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 75.15, stronger by 3 paise from its previous close of 75.18 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 75.2500 and 75.1100 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 75.31 and for Euro stood at 85.92 on July 15, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 70.24, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 94.84.
