India’s merchandise exports up by 23% in September

India’s merchandise exports rose by 22.63% in September 2021 as compared to same period of last year on better performance by key sectors like engineering goods and petroleum products. Trade deficit, gap between imports and exports, widened to $22.59 billion in September as against $2.96 billion in the same month last year.

As per the data released by the Commerce Ministry, exports in September 2021 were $33.79 Billion, as compared to $27.56 Billion in September 2020, exhibiting a positive growth of 22.63 percent.  In Rupee terms, exports were Rs 2,48,605.74 crore in September 2021, as compared to Rs 2,02,508.54 crore in September 2020, registering a positive growth of 22.76 percent. Cumulative value of exports for the period April- September 2021 was $197.89 Billion as against $125.62 Billion during the period April- September 2020, registering a positive growth of 57.53 percent. In Rupee terms, it was up by 55.42% to Rs 14,63,048.24 crore from Rs 9,41,358.09 crore.     

Non-petroleum and Non-Gems and Jewellery exports in September 2021 were $25.34 Billion, as compared to $21.33 Billion in September 2020, registering a positive growth of 18.82 percent.  Non-petroleum and Non-Gems and Jewellery exports in April- September 2021 were $149.89 Billion, as compared to $104.81 Billion for the corresponding period in 2020-21, which is an increase of 43.02 per cent.  

On the other hand, imports during September 2021 too increased by 84.77% to $56.39 billion as compared to $30.52 billion in September 2020, while in rupee terms it was up by 84.97% to Rs 4,14,812.41 crore from Rs 2,24,254.02 crore in September 2020. Cumulative value of imports for the period April- September 2021 was $276.02 Billion as against $151.94 Billion during the period April- September 2020, registering a positive growth of 81.67 percent. In rupee terms, it was Rs 20,40,890.34 crore, up by 79.18% from Rs 11,39,032.05 crore in the same period last year. 

Oil imports in September 2021 were $17.44 Billion, which was 199.27 percent higher, compared to $5.83 Billion in September 2020. Oil imports in April- September 2021 were $72.99 Billion which was 127.99 per cent higher compared to $32.01 Billion over the same period last year.  Non-oil imports in September 2021 were estimated at $38.95 Billion which was 57.75 percent higher compared to $24.69 Billion in September 2020.  Non-Oil and Non-Gold imports were $33.84 Billion in September 2021, recording a positive growth of 40.45 percent, as compared to Non-Oil and Non-Gold imports of $24.09 Billion in September 2020.
