Asian markets settle mixed on Wednesday

17 Nov 2021 Evaluate

Asian markets settled mixed on Wednesday on account of lingering inflation worries globally, while better-than-expected US retail data also fuelled concerns about an earlier than expected interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve. Japanese shares ended lower as the yen's weakness outweighed strength in technology heavyweights tracking gains in Wall Street overnight. South Korean shares declined as concerns over surging corona-virus cases dampened market sentiments. However, Chinese shares ended higher on bets that this week’s summit between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping might temporarily help ease tensions over Taiwan. Reports showing that China plans to let property firms resume issuance of asset-backed securities, while China Evergrande Group Chairman Hui Ka Yan has reportedly injected more than 7 billion yuan ($1.1 billion) in cash to boost the firm's liquidity.
