A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Ram Gopal Singh Sisodia, former Delhi legislator, challenging the nomination of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to Rajya Sabha, has been dismissed by the High Court division bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw on December 19.

Tendulkar was nominated by the government to the upper house of parliament on April 26, alongside actress Rekha and industrialist Anu Aga. The latter had challenged Tendulkar's nomination, saying he did not possess any of the required qualifications prescribed under Article 80 of the Constitution to be eligible for nomination to the Rajya Sabha. Further, senior lawyer had said that provision under Article 80 of the Constitution is not confined to inducting experts only from the fields of science, arts, literature and social services but also from sports, education and other areas.

The central government, however, had informed the court that the nomination of the cricketer to the Rajya Sabha was according to a constitutional provision.
