India- ASEAN finalises FTA on services and investments

With two decades of regional partnership, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) which comprise India and the 10 countries, to strengthen economic involvement, has finalized an FTA (Free Trade Agreements). This move is likely to boost trade to $100 billion by 2015.

The finalization of FTA was welcomed by all leaders, who also discussed about enhancing cooperation in other untapped areas. The decision was taken during the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit, attended by heads of nine Southeast nations and Vice-President of the Philippines. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, while addressing in the Summit, said “This represents a valuable milestone in our relationship. I am confident it will boost our economic ties in much the same way FTA in goods has done”.

The free trade pact after its implementation is expected to facilitate temporary movement of business people, including contractual service suppliers and independent professionals in accounting, architecture, engineering services, medical and dental, nursing and pharmacy, computer services and management consulting. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, on the timeframe of signing of the pact, said that “Only formalities are left....Substantive part is over”.
