Tea production for the month of October declines by 4.09%

As per analysis of Tea Board and traders’ organizations, the tea production for month of October has declined by 4.09% compared to same month last year. The South Indian region’s tea production has edged up marginally but the decline in North-East plantations has significantly reduced the country’s overall output.

Tea production in South India in month of October rose by 6.86% or 1.6 million Kgs (mkg) to 24.93 mkg compared to 23.33 mkg during the same month last year. The states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka accounted to 16.65 mkg, 7.71 mkg and 0.57 mkg respectively.

At the same time tea production in Assam stood at 71.80 mkg while West Bengal accounted for 31.47 mkg. In all, North Indian production during the month dropped to 104.75 mkg a decline of 6.37% or 7.13 mkg compared to 111.88 mkg during the same month last year.

The country has collectively produced 129.68 mkg in October 2012 against 135.21 mkg in Oct 2011, marking a decline of 4.09% or 5.53 mkg.
