04 Jan 2013 Evaluate

Amid demands from the Opposition for convening a special session of Parliament to pass stringent laws on crime against women, the government has said that decision could be taken only after Justice Verma Committee, set up for the purpose, submits its recommendations.

The decision is likely to come around the budget session. Anti-rape laws will be given priority in the Budget Session of Parliament, which is likely to begin mid-February.  The committee was set up on December 23 with a mandate to review the present statute so as to provide for speedier justice and enhanced punishment in cases of aggravated sexual assault. The committee has to submit its report in 30 days.

Moreover, the main Opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had reiterated its demand for a special session of Parliament, asking the government to devote 2013 to strengthen all laws related to the safety of women. Also Trinamool Congress party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had favoured a special session dedicated to strengthening anti-rape laws.
